A public memorial service to honor evangelist Oral Roberts, founder of Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association and Oral Roberts University, who died Tuesday, was held yesterday (Monday, Dec. 21) at the Mabee Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa.

The evangelist’s family, friends, and members of the public joined them to honor the life and memory Oral Roberts. They also Webcast the event for those not able to attend in person.

Evangelist Oral Roberts died Tuesday from complications of pneumonia in Newport Beach, California. Oral Roberts died at age 91 after having spent the last 74 years spreading gods word (60 of them under the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association).

Here are some of the notable events in his life:
- Oral Roberts was born into poverty in Bebee, Oklahoma, on January 24, 1918.
- His Christian ministry began with what he described as his own miracle healing of tuberculosis at age 17.
- In 1947, Roberts resigned his pastoral ministry with the Pentecostal Holiness Church to found Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association.
- Roberts was a pioneer televangelist he began broadcasting his revivals by television in 1955) and attracted a vast viewership.
- Roberts founded the Abundant Life Prayer Group in 1958
- He founded Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1963, stating he was obeying a command from God.
- In 1977, Roberts said he had a vision of a 900-foot-tall Jesus, who told him to found the City of Faith Medical and Research Center.

Oral Roberts also wrote more than 130 books, several personal commentaries on the Bible, and other inspirational material. One of his most substantive works is a 74-CD set titled Oral Roberts Reading the New Testament with His Personal Commentary that includes his life’s teachings on God’s Word. Perhaps best known is his book The Miracle of Seed Faith, which revolutionized the lives of millions of people who learned how to get their needs met through God’s eternal plan of giving and receiving.

Oral Roberts and Billy Graham were close friends. Billy Graham said that he had talked to Oral 3 weeks earlier and that during that conversation Oral told him that he was near the end of his life’s journey. Billy Graham also made this statement “Oral Roberts was a man of God, and a great friend in ministry,” the Rev. Billy Graham said in a statement Tuesday. “I loved him as a brother. We had many quiet conversations over the years.”

In remembering his father, son Richard said, “He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Oral Roberts was not only my earthly father; he was also my spiritual father and mentor. He was the greatest man of God I’ve ever known. An innovator and a modern-day apostle of the healing ministry, he was one of the first men of his generation to build a worldwide ministry, an accredited university, and a medical and research center. He had a passion to bring healing to the sick. He came along when many in Christendom did not believe in God’s power and goodness, yet his name became synonymous with miracles.”
