It looks like the Athiest Ad Campaigns are up and running again in Washington DC. The ads began appearing this week in the nations capital on the sides of city Metro Buses and city trains. The advertisements says “Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness’ sake”
The ad campain is supposed to run for the next two weeks and show up on 270 buses/trains. This same campaign ran last year and was the cause of lots of controversy. Similar ad campaigns are running on buses and billboards in other popular US and Non-US cities. Here’s the current list: Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, London, Barcelona, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary. There are variances in the details in the messages: “Don’t believe in God? You’re Not Alone”, “Good without God. Millions of Humanists Are”, “Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds”.
Last year another group started a counter campaign “Why Believe? Because I created you and I love you, for goodness’ sake. — God.” The group, Pennsylvania Friends in Christ, also placed an ad reading: “Believe in God. Christ is Christmas for goodness sake.”
I’m sure this battle will continue on year after year… after year. It seems odd to me that the City run Transit Systems would even allow for such controversial messages to appear. I know money is tight, but do we really need this kind of conflict around such an important, family focused, time of year.
Free speech maybe? Freedom of religion? Separation of church and state?
What is the atheist organization paying for the signs? I want to donate.
